Careers in Cyber Security

Whether protecting proprietary data from hackers, or keeping sensitive information out of the hands of anyone who shouldn’t have it, cyber security is the front line of defense against ever-changing threats. As more people, devices and systems connect to the internet, cybersecurity becomes more important for business, government and private citizens alike.

Cybersecurity protects electronic assets, including software, hardware, files and networks, from unauthorized access and criminal use. It’s a complex field that requires people, processes and technology to work together to keep data safe from attackers.

The good news is that a career in cybersecurity is a fast-growing industry with plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and advance within your organization. From a security analyst to a forensics specialist, there are many ways to get started in this rewarding field.

Some of the most common tools used in cybersecurity are backups, encryption and firewalls. Backups create a snapshot of a system that can be restored in the event of an attack or disaster. Encryption scrambles data, so if an attacker does steal your information, they won’t be able to read it. Firewalls block unauthorized traffic from entering your network and stop attacks like denial-of-service (DoS).

As cyberattacks become more sophisticated, there is an even greater need for skilled professionals to help prevent them. Data breaches cost businesses an average of $4.35 million in 2022, and that doesn’t include the loss of revenue or downtime from the breach itself. In fact, studies suggest the number of unfilled cybersecurity positions may reach 3.5 million by 2024. SOC
